Tights Tuesday - KNOWING WHEN TO GO SHEER AND WHEN TO GO OPAQUE

There’s a big difference in sheer and opaque hosiery, and we at Hosieree.com carry both. A couple of questions that we’re asked pretty often are “What’s the difference between opaque and sheer?” and “Which is best to wear with what?” We at Hosieree.com want to make the world of hosiery a little less confusing for all women, and our selection of high quality European hosiery can make your choice between opaque and sheer just a little bit easier!

First, an opaque pair of hose is a pair of hose that you won’t be able to see much of the leg through. Typically, these are somewhat heavier when compared to sheer hose, and different types of hosiery can vary in their level of opaqueness. Heavier hosiery made for winter wear may not show much leg at all, and offer you a complete level of color coverage. Sheer hose are just as their name suggests, and these types of hose will allow you to see through the hosiery to the skin of the leg. For summer wear, sheer hose is often quite a bit lighter than opaque hosiery, and they allow more of a cooling effect.

Now that you know just what the difference is, it’s time to learn a bit about when to wear what. A general rule of thumb that you can follow is the shorter the hemline, the darker and more opaque the hose. In one example, if you’re wearing a mini-styled skirt with an ultra-short hemline, you’ll want the coverage and drama of opaque hosiery to balance out the flirtiness of the skirt. When it comes to sheer tights, a good rule to follow would be always going sheer for anything at the knee or below. The sheer hosiery of your choice doesn’t have to be nude in color, but allowing a bit of the leg to show will create a sexy look with a modest hem, while opaque tights in this situation can make the outfit appear overdone.
